Big Brown Back on the Track

It took almost a month, but Big Brown is back on the track. For the first time since being pulled up in the Belmont Stakes, Big Brown had a workout. He breezed five furlongs at Aqueduct and the workout was nothing to write home about.

His time was 1:06.73 over a fast track.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner is set to race next in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 3rd.

Regular exercise rider Michelle Nevin was aboard Big Brown for the workout. “I told Michelle I don’t want to him to go too fast, I’d rather him go slower than faster,” trainer Rick Dutrow said.

“The horse looks like he’s fine. I can’t tell you that we got any problems. He’s good right now; he’s cooling out good drinking his water, looks like he’s happy, so we’re good.”

Nevin was not quite as encouraging as Dutrow saying, “Nothing special. Basic stuff.”  Big Brown is working out with new shoes on all four feet. Ian Ian McKinlay put on the front shoes, while Alex Leaf put on the rear ones.

“Ian said his feet look great, Alex said his back feet look very good, so it’s all good,” Dutrow said.

The quarter crack that was a concern for Big Brown is now gone. "His feet are in good shape," the trainer said. "He was shod in front Monday and behind yesterday and everything looks good. The quarter crack is long gone." The workout at Aqueduct was the first at the track for Big Brown since last fall.

Big Brown should be getting a lot more work before the Haskell. His next workout could come as early as next Tuesday. “Will we know when it happens; depending upon the weather. Everybody knows how I do it – breeze, walk, jog, gallop, gallop, breeze, walk, jog, that kind of thing.” Dutrow said.

Dutrow now has to watch his step since owners IEAH are monitoring him more closely. "We're fine as long as there are no more mistakes," said IEAH co-president Mike Iavarone. "No more (steroid) positives and no more outbursts with the media."

Da' Tara Wins the 140th Belmont Stakes

A crowd of 94,476 was shocked to see Big Brown lose the Belmont as most thought they would see Triple Crown history being made. Instead, the big winner of the 140th Belmont Stakes was 38-1 longshot Da' Tara, who led start to finish and won by 5 1/4 lengths.
